Armed with just a media pass, iPhone and a few battery packs, I was living the rockstar photographer dream at Splendour in the Grass, a 3 day music festival held in Byron Bay, a beautiful little beach town on the NSW North Coast.
I’ve never been to Splendour but have wanted to for a long time and this year I did it in unbelievable style, as Spotify’s on the ground Social Media Guy. After spending a few weeks building the social media strategy, it was time to gram, tweet, facey and tumbl my way through 3 days of intense fun.
Covering live events on social is one of my favourite things to do, even with a plan in hand you’re immersed in the excitement of people living it up, new ideas and a whole lot of fun, which makes for an unpredictable adventure of on your feet ( literally) creative thinking. Splendour of course has the added bonus of discovering new music the best way you can, Live!
So what does 3 days of running from campsite to media pit for 14 hours a day feel like? From the arrival of the first camper to the stage lights dimming after Lilly Allen’s festival closing act, I found myself living a once in a lifetime, can’t stop giggling, wtf is happening, rock star photographer dream.
Campsite – day 1. The campers were pumped and ready to smash it, and themselves, up! A great Splendour. Finding people to jump in front of the camera and pull a great shot was as easy as it was fun.
Asking “Who’s your #1 to see?” had people jumping, bouncing, fist pumping, screaming and even kissing me with excitement.. and the responses were as varied as the reactions. Violent Soho, Chvrches, City and Colour, Sticky Fingers, Foster the People, Outkast, Angus and Julia Stone… the quality acts just kept coming.
Even by the last day the campsite vibe was pumping.. but then everyone was high as fuck for 3 days and loving life so you’d hope so brah.
Day 2 is where it got surreal. There I was in the photographers pit, at the foot of the stage, shooting pics only rock star photographers get to shoot.. “Who’s fucking life is this?” “How the fuuuucckk”.. all I could do was giggle to myself, roll with the adventure and shoot some fucking rock star magic.
Kelis, Foals, Chvrches, Future Islands, Ben Howard, Lily Allen, Metronomy, Presets, Interpol, Grouplove, City and Colour, KLP,… I kept rolling out the shots to all sorts of quality tunes. Amazingly I only fanboyed out a couple of times…being only metres away from Aussie hip hop masters Hilltop Hoods and 360 and watching a brand new discovery and instant fave, Childish Gambino.
3 days with the festival crowd, I even added to my straight hipster vocab.. now everything is totes sick as brah. (it’s driving my friends nuts already… fuuuck yeah braaah;)
Music festivals are fucking mad…living the rockstar photographer dream, I’m ready for more.
Break out the butter, I’ll be back real soon
Todays toast served with sick beats.
